THE PICK: Charlie Plumb
My pick of the week is Captain Charlie Plumb. Given our current economy, his message about overcoming adversity in challenging times resonates with audiences at all levels. And, his message translates in every sector today.
Charlie Plumb is a former Prisoner of War and one of the most sought after achievement speakers in the US. In fact, he was recently selected as one of the ten top speakers in America in a poll of U.S. meeting planners, published in Successful Meetings magazine. His presentations deal with the value of inner strength in overcoming adversity and how people in their business and personal lives create their own prisons through fear of failure, blaming others and self-pity. His presentations are sincere, straight-forward, humorous, and tailored to each specific audience.
Plumb went through Navy flight training in Florida, Mississippi and Texas and was awarded Navy wings of gold in November 1965. In San Diego, he trained to pilot the F4-B Phantom, the Navy’s newest supersonic interceptor. There he was instrumental in starting the Navy Fighter Weapons School, now called “Top Gun.” He spent the next five years and nine months in captivity. During his imprisonment, he distinguished himself among his fellow prisoners as a professional in underground communication. He was repatriated on February 18, 1973, underwent medical and security debriefings, and returned to his home on March 4, where he was awarded the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit and the POW Medal. Plumb is frequently called on for his expertise by the U.S. Navy, governmental organizations, and the news media. He is author of two books, I’m No Hero and The Last Domino, and several audio and video tapes.
