Amazing movie......it had me in tears. Being an elementary teacher myself and facing challenges teaching in the schools in Australia, it gave me such inspiration and that determination never to give up. From teaching 18 years in Texas schools and then a big switch to teaching in primary schools on the central coast of Australia, i can honestly say there will never be a time to stop learning...........i have learned more that i have taught. Interactive three part learning. THANKS for this true story. Catherine

In my local area I am a part of a mommies group. The group is 150 women strong. 2.5 years ago, I organized a Meal Support Program for our members. The premise was that if a member needed assistance with meals because of the birth of a baby, a surgery, a death in the family or similar, people would volunteer to make a dinner for that member and deliver it to her home. The MSP has made close to 1000 meals for our members since it began. And, I was fortunate enough to partake when my youngest son was born- My husband enjoyed homemade dinners for 3 weeks straight!! A program like this is especially helpful since many of our members are transplants to Orange County and don't have a lot of family living close by. I love to cook (when the kids go to bed, this is my therapy) and this gives me a way to help others in my community.

I would disagree that business networking via social media is only about "answering client questions, passing on information to prospects, and gaining knowledge about your pressing business questions." In fact, that mindset seems very "old school". Business relationships and bonds are created on many levels and can be initiated by topics of mutual personal interest including sports, wine, photography or even your son's baseball game. People fail with social media networking often because they present a one dimensional, business-first persona that feels like a nonstop sales pitch. The social media milieu requires and even demands an authenticity and interactions that offer more than an elevator pitch and product information.

Dan, you make several good points. For example, the separation of personal from business is critical and something I have been working on. The technical requirements (as I currently understand them) demand that a personal Facebook account exists before a business Facebook account could be created. I am working to now separate feeds and overlap between the two but find it a bit of a struggle. I am told the best way is to convert appropriate "friends" from the personal to be "fans" of the business version. Some media gurus imply that the social networking for business works better with a "bit" of the personal stuff worked in. I believe that to be true to a point.

I compare it to meeting a new business colleague for coffee and finding some of the conversation involves personal stuff such as hobbies, travel and family. It does seem to help build the relationship when you see the other person as more than a job title.

Thanks Theresa! Yes, it's hard to think of too many people who are as inspiring as Rocky Bleier is when it comes to adversity. It's not only about his physical toughness, but mental.

Thanks for this inspiring piece Sheldon! Very timely. It helps to know in these times that we're not alone in having to rethink, regroup and react differently on this roller coaster we call the speaking biz. Staying fresh, funny and booked has become a challenge this past year but your Rocky Bleier reference has given me that spot of hope I needed.
Well done Mate!
